Gary O’Neil says Wolves cannot keep saying the right things and performing on the pitch after a dismal evening at Everton on Wednesday.

The Old Gold conceded from four set pieces at Goodison Park as O’Neil’s side endured one of their worst nights of the season. The head coach acknowledges that his team did not master the basics well tonight and has called on the entire group to do more, as the focus quickly shifts to another big match at West Ham United on Monday.

About the need to do more

“Everyone at this football club has to do more at the moment, all of us, because that doesn’t give you a chance. The players accept that. But we can’t just sit here and keep saying that. So because we had a real shock at Brentford a few months ago, this one feels on the same level as that one for me.

“I know the work that goes into preparing the team for every little bit that’s in store for them tonight, just like against Bournemouth, and we still couldn’t deal with that. That’s my responsibility, and now we’re going to work with everything I have to give ourselves a better chance in the next one.”

Here’s to more mistakes that lead to goals

“Basic stuff. We can’t even get the wall in the right place. We couldn’t handle Everton’s physicality, long balls, balls into the penalty area, we just couldn’t handle it. A tremendous amount of work needs to be done to give the group a better chance in the coming matches. Try to find a way to give them more of a platform to have a shot. Like I’ve said a million times, the other stuff is irrelevant because we give away so many goals from situations that are quite basic.

“Bournemouth are a pressing team and we cannot deal with that. Everton are a physical team and we couldn’t deal with that. So there’s an awful lot we have to do to try to find a way to give this team more opportunities on a consistent basis.

“We have found ways to be competitive in recent weeks in the four games we have not lost, but as we sat here tonight, this was a very heavy blow for myself and the group and the supporters who deserve a compliment. big mention to the journeys they make, the support they have given me since I’ve been here and I understand all their criticism of myself, and I’m happy to take full responsibility for my part in where the team is at this moment.”

About not dealing with set pieces

“We couldn’t deal with their physicality. We had people in the right places and couldn’t compete. A corner right after the break is only two meters away and they get the contact.

“To give Everton the first goal when they are clearly struggling for confidence and goal scoring and to be able to just kick it straight into the goal around the wall, you don’t see that very often, similar to the goals against Bournemouth. if you don’t see that very often. The focus must quickly shift to trying to give the team the best chances again on Monday.”

About supporting the players

“I will continue to support all my players. Of course I will try to pick the right team to give us a chance. This season I have used every center back combination. I’ve used two, I’ve used three, sometimes Toti and Santi, sometimes Santi and Daws, sometimes Toti and Daws, sometimes all three. We used Guedes, we used Forbes, we used Rodrigo, we used Channy. So I think we’ve used pretty much every option available to us so far, and none of them have consistently given us a platform to win football games.

“We will immediately get back to work to be ready for battle again on Monday, because I have to go there with the group. For whatever reason, right now we can’t consistently get this group to compete against that type of test. So we have to find a way. We have to find a way to give the group a better chance on Monday night at West Ham.”
